Mental Health: The Conversation We Can’t Ignore

Not long ago, conversations about one’s state of mind were kept secret—should they occur at all. Nowadays, we speak openly about mental health, but a lot of people remain shy to confess that they need help. And what I’ve come to understand is that we focus on people’s physical health way too often, but not their emotional well-being.

The current pace of life is overwhelming indeed. Working hard, studying, dealing with family matters, and financial issues all add up to our stress level. Social media doesn’t help either, since it encourages us to compare ourselves to others and makes us feel like we’re falling behind no matter what.

A particular situation doesn’t determine mental health; various factors such as constant stress, feelings of loneliness, financial troubles, problematic relationships, lack of sleep, mourning, and many other things have an impact on our mentality and way of responding to different situations. Sometimes it may take quite some time before one realises that they are suffering from mental exhaustion.

It is important to understand that one does not have to resort to drastic measures to maintain one’s mental health. In most cases, all one needs to do is take a few small steps, like getting enough sleep, disconnecting from social media, meeting with family and friends, working out, and simply meditating over a cup of tea. All these actions might seem simple, but they allow one to pause, think, and relax.

It is equally essential to learn how to ask for assistance whenever you need it. One would consult a doctor if they have some physical problems, which means that there should be no shame in consulting a professional if something seems off regarding your mental condition. Seeking help shows one’s ability to take care of themselves.

Mental health is not about constantly feeling good. Instead, it involves learning to cope with life’s challenges and to experience different emotions without judging oneself.

One thing that I hope we all remember is the importance of being kind to others. You never know what someone else is going through, and you do not need to bear your load alone. Sometimes an understanding ear and a genuine conversation may help more than we think.

Let us continue our efforts to make conversations about our mental well-being the norm rather than something exceptional to do during Mental Health Awareness campaigns. Taking care of our mental health gives us a chance to improve our quality of life.
